Wilson Featured Player - Grant Stuckey Working Hard for Fun - Grant Stuckey Grant Stuckey has been playing tennis almost all his life, and for the 8th grader, that's a long time. Now, with a recent ranking of # 1 in North Carolina in Boys 12, he can pause to take a look back at his road to success. "I started playing with my dad at age three," the teenager from Charlotte, NC explains.  As he learned more about the game, Grant discovered that he liked to compete and that tennis gave him a way to do this, as well as to travel and make new friends from different places.

"My parents would take me to catch and throw the balls on the tennis court," Jeffrey says. "When I could hold a racquet, I started volleying the balls and letting my dogs retrieve them." Jeffrey's parents had a good read on their son's personality.  Ranked in the top 10 for Boys 12 and under in the Southern Section, Jeffrey maintains an enthusiasm and excitement for the game.

This experience is good preparation to get Jeffrey to his long-term goals: first to play for an Ivy League school, then to become a professional tennis player.  Fortunately, Jeffrey also enjoys playing the game.

Fun and Hard Work Make for More…Fun! - Jeffrey Dewald

Jeffrey Dewald began playing tennis when he was just three years old.  His parents loved the game, and wanted to pass that enjoyment on to him, by creating a sense of fun.

"My parents would take me to catch and throw the balls on the tennis court," Jeffrey says. "When I could hold a racquet, I started volleying the balls and letting my dogs retrieve them."

Jeffrey's parents had a good read on their son's personality.  Ranked in the top 10 for Boys 12 and under in the Southern Section, Jeffrey maintains an enthusiasm and excitement for the game.

"I like the competitive nature of tennis," he says.  "Chasing a yellow ball around the court is fun!"

But Jeffrey says that he combines the fun with hard work in order to get better.  Practicing six days a week for two to two and a half hours a day is part of his plan to play college tennis.  At 4'11 and 68 pounds, Jeffrey would love to grow a little, but in the meantime, he is working with coach Andy Veal on improving his game through shot selection, control and a kick serve.

It may be a lot of work, he says, but that's what's needed to get him to his goal.

It's not always easy and he has had setbacks, he admits.  Last fall, for example, he broke his toe playing pick-up football at school and ended up missing the Fall Southern Closed Championship.

"Losing opportunities for points hurts when you are sitting at home recovering," he says.  Still, he realizes he is fortunate to have the opportunities he does.  Not too far from his mind is the serious challenge facing another promising junior player from his club, who is battling cancer.

"I just want to give a shout out to Sean Karl, a great tennis player from Wildwood Tennis. Fight on!" Jeffrey says.

When Jeffrey isn't playing tennis, you can find him in the woods of Tennessee and surrounding states, riding his motocross bike with his dad and his brother.  But more likely, you'll see him working on his tennis game.
