Working Hard for Fun - Grant Stuckey

Grant Stuckey has been playing tennis almost all his life, and for the 8th grader, that's a long time. Now, with a recent ranking of # 1 in North Carolina in Boys 12, he can pause to take a look back at his road to success.

"I started playing with my dad at age three," the teenager from Charlotte, NC explains.  As he learned more about the game, Grant discovered that he liked to compete and that tennis gave him a way to do this, as well as to travel and make new friends from different places.

Training in Charlotte at the John Sadri Tennis Academy as well as with Robby Edge at Topspin Tennis Academy, Grant learned early that discipline was necessary in order to improve his game.

"I practice every day for two hours," he says.  "Practice, practice practice," he emphasizes.

Grant knows that in addition to increasing consistency, he also has to improve his skills.  That's why, three years ago, he changed his forehand grip to give him more power.  In addition, Grant also has had to learn patience, like when he broke the finger on his dominant left hand, and had to wear a splint while it recovered.

State: NC
Dist. Rank: 2
Sectl Rank: 25
Natl Rank: 255

Although tennis is Grant's main love, he enjoys other sports as well, such as football (that's where the broken finger occurred!), basketball and tubing.

Ultimately, Grant says, he'd like to go to college on a tennis scholarship and eventually become an orthodontist.  Grant says that he appreciates his father for training him and his mother for driving him to tournaments and practices. It's not always easy, Grant says, but it's worth it.

"Hard work does pay off," he confirms.
