Competition Leads the Way

S

teven Karl's favorite word may well be "competition." That's what motivates him to get on the tennis court every day to practice, and it is what has helped the Brentwood, Tennessee resident rank third among Boys 14s in the Southern Section.

That love of competition is helpful in Steven's quest for his next goal, to get a scholarship to play tennis at a Division 1 college.

Although Steven has a long-term plan for playing tennis, he also makes the most of the journey right now. He started playing tennis with his father and brothers and found he enjoyed it.

"My father pushed me to reach my full potential," Steven says. But Steven pushes himself too, so in addition to his training at the Wildwood Tennis Center in Nashville, he trains hard on the ball machine and hits with other kids in his area.

What makes him so hungry for success? "I love the battle," he admits. He also enjoys the individual aspect of the game.

"I love the battle" says Steven. This is what makes him hungry for success.

One thing Steven has learned is not to be afraid to change his game to improve it. Recently, in fact, he has changed his service motion.

But for all of his hard work and focus, Steven is still a teenager with a sense of humor, and one of his favorite things to do is to kick back and watch "The Hangover."
