Practice, Practice, Practice

C

ompetition doesn't scare Wood Benton. Currently ranked number one for Boys' 14 Division in South Carolina, Wood has a philosophical approach to getting ready for his opponents.

"I practice as much as I can with whoever I can," he says. " It doesn't matter if they're better than me or worse than me. As long as I'm hitting balls, I'm getting better."

Wood credits his dad for introducing him into the game. His father played tennis all of his life, and when Wood was four years old, started him on lessons. These days, Wood practices every weekday except for Friday, and usually goes to tournaments on weekends.

The best part of the tennis life? "Competing, and most of all, WINNING," Wood emphasizes. "Going to the biggest tournaments and being able to play the best people to see how you stack up with them."

In addition to practicing, Wood has been fine-tuning his game, thanks to Larry Rizzo, his first coach, and, since moving to Spartanburg, to his current coach, Cornelius Jordan, at the Country Club of Spartanburg.

Wood changed his forehand grip from extreme western to a western grip, and has been working hard on fitness by running and doing agility work. Through training and good fortune, he's had few injuries to slow down his progress.

The best part of the tennis life? "Competing, and most of all, WINNING," But Wood isn't only about tennis. He loves playing backyard football with his friends, and, like most teenage boys, enjoys music (Dave Matthews) and movies (The Hangover).

Long-term, Wood hopes to continue playing tennis and attend University of South Carolina or University of Georgia. And maybe one day, when he's an adult and has played tennis all of his life, Wood will introduce the game of tennis to the next generation too.
